annoying intermittent scratching sound from...OS?

Does anyone recognize this problem? I get this phantom sound at random times. Sometimes often, sometimes not at all. It goes

scratch.......scratch

That's it. Two scratches (sort of like when you strike a wooden match on the box) separated by about a second. Then nothing. I haven't correlated anything to it. Familiar? Ideas? Random guesses?

I have XP Professional, Audiophile 2496, AMD X2 4400+. Don't know what else could be relevent.

Thanks in advance.

Wildduck:
Yep, I get it, too, on the machine that connects to the internet.
I seem to remember deciding on what the cause was, but now I can't remember what.

zemlin:
Can you post an example?
(welcome back!)

hulot:
Good idea. I will try. It's intermittent and lasts for two seconds, and of course hasn't happened since I wrote the first post! But as soon as I can, I'll post a sample.

hulot:
By some enormous luck I heard the sound today and the windows were arranged just right so I could realize IT'S THE ANIMATED DOG ICON ON THE XP SEARCH PAGE!! If you ignore him, he scratches himself.

SHEESH. I mean WOOF.

So it was a moot problem. No way would I be recording and doing disc searches at the same time. But it was driving me crazy.

Thanks to all who replied
