We just received a CoolEdit Pro for our production studio, and I'm having a problem setting it up so that we can record in multitrack while other tracks are playing. I've figured how to set it up to record a distinct separate track - I keep the sound card in monitor function, and just monitor myself out of the computer.
But then, as soon as I am ready to play the finished product from CoolEdit Pro through our board to our automated system, I get feedback unless I mute my card's monitor function.
I know this is basic audio, but voice talent is fickle when it comes to having to change settings on board or computer. Do any of you have your board set up so a person doesn't have to change the computer settings in between recording and playing in multitrack? Maybe this involves using extra channels on the board?

The easiest way is to use a multi-bus board. That way you playback into your stereo bus (which outs to your DA to wherever you want to record), but you sent to the computer a different bus. No muss, no fuss, push a button and no feedback!

If you are unfortunate enough to use a standard broadcast console, then the easiest method is to feed the DAW computer from the audition bus and monitor the whole works through the program bus... basically everything you want to record into the DAW is put in audition only and just the computer is on the program bus... this is the setup we use and its easy to do and easy for the jocks to learn.

Hey, I could be completly wrong about this, but
I never start any session in the mult-session view. I always start in the single view and add my work parts to the session as I go along. I always have a problem understanding why a person would want to start things in multi-track in radio. Like I said, I could be completly off base here.

You'd want to work in multitrack if you are having (for example) your voice talent read to music or jingle. Or you want to see how 2 imaging elements work together. For any number of reasons actually ...

Typically I record all the elements I need into a couple of files.. voice talent in one file, audio clipart in another, and then assemble the project in multitrack view. This works out well, and makes it easy to find all the related files in a project.
