We have tested the Roland UA-30s and UA-100s quite extensively and they seem to be rather solid, even under Windows 2000 (with the proper driver). Sonically, they are pretty good; not the most hi-fi, but then again, USB is not exactly the optimum audio connection to begin with. For most applications, they should be more than sufficient.
A slightly newer USB device which has really great sound A/D converters is the US-428 from Tascam. As a soundcard (capable of 4-Ins) it is really terrific, with extremely high quality conversion and nice preamplification (though, no phantom power and it only supports sample rates up to 48k). Check them both out, as the UA-100 has some other features that the tascam doesn't have, like built-in effects.

how would you compare the midiman audiophile 2496 to the roland ua30 in terms of sound?

if you can-i'd say stay away from all of em.VERY unreliable.mucho problems with via or sis chipsets especially.the cheaper devices have no monitoring capablities.the more expensive ones have poor sound quality, when compared to ordinary sound cards in the same price range.the tascam has a sn ratio of 82 db.compare that to the m audio delta series cards-sn is 108 db.both are the published specs-your mileage may vary...

hi, i use the opcode sonicport which has analog stereo in/out, and s/pdif stereo in/out. i mainly use the digital port as an interface with my akai dr16 and ce2k with tc works native bundle direct x,which i use for direct digital mastering. this arrangement works very well and at high quality up to 24 bit. the opcode device is no longer in production but if you can find one somewhere, i would recomend it.

I've got a Sonicport too. It's extremely quiet... it don't work! It expired along with the company while still under warranty, and no one would touch it. Gibson bought Opcode some time back and then wound the company up. Apart from Roland, Egosys and Tascam I believe Swiss Sonic also make a USB interface.

Good Luck

Boy, this is an old thread, but since I own both a SonicPort and a Tascam US-428 I'll throw in my two-cents.
The SonicPort never worked reliably on any of my seven systems which range from a 450 mHz AMD K6 with Via chipset to a 1gHz PIII with the recommended Intel chipset.
The US-428 works, but with unacceptable glitches on the MVP3 Via chip machines, acceptably on the KT133 Via chip machines, and flawlessly (except for a driver flaw which reduces the digital out by around 7 db. This should be fixed in the next driver release) in the all Intel machines. As Synt Support pointed out, the A/D converters sound better then most comparable internal cards.
The interface that most interests me now is Mark of the Unicorn's 828 firewire device. 8 analog in/outs, 6 ins are TRS and the other two are combo XLR (mic. with phantom)/TRS. It also has digital i/o and fits in a single rack space. It's shipping and I was wondering if anyone has had the opportunity to try it out.
