Newbie question!
I want to set up a little home studio so that I can a) produce some short radio documentairies b) produce a short classical music radio program (using keyboard/mic and CD). My problem is that I know what I want to do - but I'm not sure *how* to do it.
I have a portable Sony MD Z-2 and a Yamaha MD4S and am also going to get cool edit with the 4-track plug in. I want to be able to record CD, mic and keyboard simultaneously (for the classical music show). Can I do this on Cool Edit?
I'm not sure whether I will really need the Yamaha - although I've been told that I could plug mic/keyboard and CD into the yamaha - then plug this into my soundcard and use Cool Edit. What is the difference between doing this and just using the Cd Rom drive and the mic and line in plugs to record straight onto my computer? (Sorry if these are dumb questions- I'm new to all of this!)
Any advice welcome,
Emma

2 ways of doing this.
1 - If you want to record keys, mic, and CD to separate tracks in the 4-track, you'll need a multichannel soundcard and a preamp for the mic. Patch each source to its own input on the soundcard and assign each input to a separate software track.
2 - Record the whole show "live to 2-track". Then what you'll need is a stereo soundcard and a small mixer. Patch all your sources to the mixer, then line out of the mixer to line in on the soundcard. Then do the whole show as if you were going live ... LIKE REAL RADIO SHOULD BE! (sorry, personal rant).

Hello Emma. Under Cool Edit 2000, even with a multi-input soundcard, you're only able to record two channels at once...so the 'recording mic, CD and keyboard to separate channels simultaneously' is not going to work (unless you were using Cool Edit Pro).
you can, however, route all the signals through your Yamaha and then feed them (stereo In) into your soundcard...or simply do them 2 at a time, taking advantage of the multiple tracks...
You can still have the separation, but you can't do more than 2 at a time...
