DFI mobo, 256 mb, k63-450, 20g Ide, 9g scsi,
2940uw scsi card. (but I don't think the specs are related here)
I have a Turtle Beach sound card that installs and runs great for about 5 minutes
then suddenly stops. When I check around in
Dev. Mngr, Multimedia, etc. ...the card is
gone. No name, no driver, no conflicts, nothing. I then reinstall, reboot and I'm fine for another 5 minutes or so.
WTF?
This card cost me $500 so before I quit on it
I'd like to be sure it's had it.
Anyone had any similar wackyness??

Yes, we see this problem once in a while. And it's usually Turtle Beach sound cards. In most cases, re-installing the driver fixes the problem. If you continue to have problems, try installing the latest MS DirectX (8.0a) since it will also update sound card drivers. Some users have reported installing Windows Media Player 7 has fixed their problem.
Of course, if there is a conflict between the sound card and another device, new drivers won't help.
You can take the sound card out and move it to a different PCI slot. Sometimes that fixes conflicts. Go to Control Panel > System > Device Manager. Do any of them have a yellow (!)? This means a device conflict.
Have you contacted TB technical Support about this?

Thanx Support for the info. I've contacted
TB but they're not too interested in this "old" card now, and they won't even
give me simple suggestions like yours.
The card is ISA so my options are fairly
limited with slots. I will try the DirectX
and Media Player fixes. Interestingly, there are no errors or conflicts anywhere .. the
driver just disappears .. I reinstall ..and
then I'm good for about 5-10 minutes.
I just love computers.
Thanx again.

To further bolster Synt Support's comments, I've had a few bad experiences working with Turtle Beach cards, as well. Several people have come to me with similar problems on their home studio systems. The problems run the gambit, from drivers that won't install, period, to dissappearing drivers (as in your case) to drivers that just don't work very well, even for the OS they were written for.
One friend of mine never could get 20-bit support working on his card (only 16) and ended up making the store he bought it from take it back.
Sorry to hear about another one...
Best of luck sorting it out, Bill!
-Jon :-)

Follow up:
Thanx for all the feedback guys.
After 2 weeks of toil and swapping out everything in the box except the power supply, the problem is certainly the TB card or it's driver -or both. And it's only the wav section of the card, not the midi.
So ..I've bypassed the TB wav (by simply de-selecting it) and now I use only my LAYLA card for waves and the TB for MIDI.
So far so good.
Footnote:
During this ordeal I had a band's demo CD to
mix that was already late. In a panic I bought a Sound Blaster Live card just to finish the project. I was amazed at how poor
the sounds were and how AOL-ish (childish looking) the apps were. Since I'm not a gamer
I guess I'm not missing much with SB cards.
The TB may be a butt-pain but it sure does sound great.
Thanx again all.
