Does anyone know of a feature of CoolEdit 2000 (or a combination of) that will compress/limit MP3s the way that an Orban Optimod would. If you are not familiar with the gear, it breaks the audio down into several bands and compress/limits each band individually, creating a very smooth output.
Nothing I found so far in CoolEdit will do this. At the very least, how bout just something that compresses AND expands giving me at least consistant level throuought the song. Normalization doesn't cut it.

Hello Bob. Well, you can compress and expand using the COmpressor in the Dynamics Processor (found under Transform>Amplitude). In the traditional tab you have the option to add compression AND expansion with varying ratios and thresholds.

However, you initial question was regarding multi-band limiting/compressing. This can be done manually as a multistep process in CE by selecting the 'Band Limit' tab in the Dynamics Processor window, and then applying either compression or limiting accordingly to each selected band. Of course, this is a rather lengthy process and not exactly what you're looking for...but it will work.

You have to spring for a DX plug in. The best multiband compressor is the Waves C4 ... but being the best it's pretty expensive. Also check out the PhonoXone Terminator or the db Audio mulitband limiter. I think Steinberg has one as well as part of their Mastering Tools package. Note that all of these won't sound EXACTLY like an Optimod, as the Orban is 5-7 bands of processing (depending on model)while the Waves is 4 and the other 2 are 3 band.

... all that being said, I'm assuming that Syntrillium will include a multiband compressor in the now long overdue upgrade to CEP.

Also a company called Izotope is coming out with a multiband dynamics plug in, but I haven't seen it yet.

hi Bob. There is a PC version of the Waves Bundle of plugins. The free demo can be downloaded, but you must first supply some email information (kind of like a pre-registration). It will then take you to the downloads page, and you'll be able to get a14-day fully functional demo of their acclaimed 'native bundle' which has their C4 compressor, L1-Ultra Maximizer and more...

For an I use it unbeatable price ($99 I think) or a 21-day free fully-functional demo you absolutely MUST checkout www.db-audioware.com for their multiband compressor which works very effectively in a large number of programs incl. CEP. I use it on our final broadcast output. Excellent.
