I am using cool edit pro for editing all old collections of classical music. These are being directly copied into wave form from either the cassette recorder or old type spool. sometimes, the noise gets mixed with one the instrument. If I try to remove the noise, the instrument which would be most required goes feeble. could any body help to resolve this.thank, manju

Hello Manju. From what little you've described, it simply sounds like you're overusing the Noise Reduction. To get the best results, you essentially want to highlight a portion of the wavefile that is JUST NOISE. Go into Transform>Noise Reduction>Noise Reduction and click on 'Get Profile From Selection.' This will take a snapshot of the noise profile. Click CLOSE. Now, highlight the ENTIRE wavefile and go back into Noise Reduction. Click on the Preview button and drag the Noise Reduction Level slider until you hear a comfortable amount of Noise Reduction without artifacts (and making the instruments sounds thin). Click STOP and then Click OK to process.

Keep in mind, that if these recordings were made using some type of noise reduction (ie, Dolby, DBX) when they were originally recorded, you'll want to use those on playback. Also, with the reel-to-reel, selecting the proper tape EQ (IEC or NAB) is also crucial to getting a proper transfer.
