 Recommendation on USB CD/RW

I have a Toshiba Pentium II 266 Tecra 8000 laptop that has a USB port. Can I get an external CD/RW to burn music/data? What would y'all recommend. I'd like to find one with Adaptec 4.0+ software so I could also upgrade my 3.5 on my desktop.
