You may be thinking of 'Cool Edit Plugins List' which relates to a type of plug-in which differs somewhat from DX plug-ins. (If it's DX plugins you are looking for, Google will bring them up by the ton). The plug-ins in the thread for which I have given the link appear as extra options within the menus, integrated into Cool Edit. The site for the one I personally have found most useful (the MS Mixer plugin) seems already to have disappeared but I'm happy to email it if you email me first.

All DirectX plug-ins SHOULD work in any software that HOST Direct X. The VST plug-ins can be with the use of a "Wrapper".

For Cool Edit 2000, you have to download an upgrade (free from the downloads page of this site) in order to make DX effects work at all. If you have Cool Edit Pro 2.0, that is DX ready as supplied. AS VoodooRadio says, all DX effects should work, but a few don't! I won't attempt to say why because the reasons vary. Personally I wouldn't pay for a DX plug-in which I hadn't tried for compatibility first.

I take the same approach. I usually download a "trial version" on the "internet computer" and give it an audition. If.. it passes muster, I'll purchase it and load it on my DAW. Nothing gets to my DAW that hasn't passed "my own" extensive battering!
