I don't consider them "competition", because they don't do the same thing! So........

Antares has announced a new "Tube" Analog Tube Modeling Plug-in, in RTAS, VST and DirectX formats.

Tube Features

- Models the effect of a high-quality analog tube preamp
- Two tube models for a variety of sonic effects
- OmniTube lets you apply the tube effect to the entire signal
- Superb sound quality
- Extremely DSP efficient - use Tube simultaneously on dozens of tracks
- Really easy to use
- Surprisingly affordable

Nice. I'm not really sure that I can totally agree with the type of software Antares puts out, but what they've done, it seems they've done pretty good. I might have to check out a demo (if there is one).

Yes, there is a demo. They emailed me yesterday, which was why I was aware of the release. I downloaded it last night, but haven't had the time to sort through it yet. I personally think that Antares' biggest fault is in their marketing. They make GREAT quality software, but somehow always seem to misrepresent it. I have the Mic Modeler software (which is why I'm on the mailing list) and while it doesn't necessarily do what they claim, it is AWSOME when being used as an E.Q. type filter. Want huge guitar (or vocal or anything else), make a couple of copies, run each one through a different "mic model" and place them around the stereo field. BAM (as Emeril would say) you've got huge tracks. I admittingly bought into their "hype" and while I am a bit disappointed in that, I am extremely impressed with the softwares actual capabilities. :)

If they could just hire some decent Ad/PR folks.....

Just thought I'd comment here on the Tube plugin...

Well, I can honestly say that I'm not terribly impressed with the sound; it's vaguely reminiscent of a tube-pre (and, as voodoo mentioned, is actually quite efficient in Edit View as well as Multitrack, metering and all) but it's sonically no better than most of the other tube simulators out there.

I tried it on a variety of source files (drums, both rock and jazz, an entire mix, guitar, voice) and on a very low setting, (which is evidently the hardest thing to mimic) it wasn't very revealing. You really have to crank it up, at which point it sounds good, but not spectacular.

Overall, I'd say that it's probably a pretty good value, and if you need a down-and-dirty tube simulator, it's an efficient plugin with a simple (and quite eye-catching) UI. It's worth a listen.

Well, I finally go a chance to mess around with the "tube" plug-in. As Synt alludes to, driven hard it sounds better but is still not "all that and a bag of chips"! I also have AIPL's Warmtone plug-in, which I think sounds as good or better. Wink

I downloaded it for the 10 day free trial. It was fancy and really easy to use but I don't think that $150 is "surprisingly affordable".

As I mentioned previously, I'm wasn't that impressed. However, if a person found regular use for it in their "kit", then IMO... $150 is merely change. ;)

Notice how I stated that.... IF a person can find enough use to justify the cost. Wink
