For what purpose?

I'm sure some folks might could find a use. For years (using outboard gear), I had my wife (a CAD designer) draw up sheets of paper that showed the face of my rack gear on it. I had 3 sheets for 3 racks. When I was working on a mix, I would take a pen and a sheet per rack and make notations of where things were set so as to be capable of "re-setting" things. With those and a Track Sheet, I could jump around to different projects and rest assured that I could "dial up" a session from a previous time. Shy

I'm sure they could. I use spreadsheets for all sorts of things.

What I was trying to convey (albeit, a litle cryptically) was some sense of the poll not really having much of a direction. I imagine that a good many forum members use spreadsheets - but what they use them for, or whether that use is audio related, is another question altogether.

I can answer 'yes' to the question - but it has nothing to do with CE. As it stands, the whole thing seems a little pointless to me.

I see your point Graeme. I "assumed" (which is not always a good thing) that bonnder WAS referring to.... "in conjunction with CEP". Wink

There is a short thread at

'FFT filter.'

that sets the stage for the answer to the question "of what relevance is this poll"? If you don't ever create presets for CE's FFT Filter, this answer will probably not interest you. If you do create presets, hopefully you will understand what I am saying here. My direct answer is at Point 6 below. But you need to read Points 1-5 for Point 6 to make the most sense.

In building presets for CE's FFT Filter, there are a series of calculations that must be completed: (this is for CE2K)

1. For any given frequency value, what is its corresponding note? (e.g., 11,839.82 = F#9)

2. For any given note, C0 - B10, what is its corresponding frequency value?

3. For a given frequency value (e.g. A4 = 440 hz)

- what is the frequency value for 1/2 step down? 1/2 step up? (for notch = 1 step wide)
- what is the frequency value for 1/4 step down? 1/4 step up? (for notch = 1/2 step wide)

- what is the frequency value of A4 one octave higher? two octaves? three octaves? four? five?
- for each octave higher, what is the frequency value of 1/2 step down? 1/2 step up?
- for each octave higher, what is the frequency value of 1/4 step down? 1/4 step up?

4. The standard frequency value for note A4 = 440 hz. But what if the performance you save to your hard drive is slightly fast or slightly slow from standard? You will end up with an actual A4 frequency value that is slightly less than or slightly more than 440 hz - as measured by CE's Frequency Analyzer. If you don't pitch-shift to make A4 dead-on 440 hz, how will you calculate the answers to Points 2 and 3 above?

5. CE's FFT Filter shows a range on the X-Axis of 0 - 22,050(?) hz. But if you plug hz values into a preset and copy it to "Cool.ini", you will get nonsensical notches. The presets use some value between 0 and 4096 to represent various frequency values between 0 and 22,050. To make a useful preset, you must make a successful translation between frequency values and CE's X-Axis values for the FFT Filter.

In the thread I gave above, Moregan makes a start at helping CE users make this translation. However, his values work only when when "Log Scale" is checked/selected on the FFT Filter. When "Log Scale" is not checked, Moregan's values don't apply. Furthermore, how do you quickly find a value in Moregan's list?

6. I have created an Excel spreadsheet. Enter one note value (e.g. A0) or one frequency value (e.g., 27.50) and the spreadsheet will instantly calculate the answers to all issues raised in Points 1-5 above for 10 octaves of notes/frequency values, and for all Points 1-4096 on the X-Axis of the FFT Filter. Additionally, the spreadsheet will generate presets with up to six notches and with the proper X-Axis values substituted for the frequency values. I use the presets to isolate/cut one frequency over up to 6 octaves, but one could enter six unrelated frequency values to create a preset that isolates/cuts six unrelated frequencies.

At some point I will post this spreadsheet on my website so that anyone who is interested can download it. The caclulation ranges are all done but I am still drafting the explanation for how to use the spreadsheet with the Frequency Analyzer and the FFT Filter. Before I post the spreadsheet I will pass it to interested parties to critique both the layout and the explanations of how to use it. I will put out a call for volunteers when I am ready for that critique. In the meantime, I thought I would see how this polling thing works - although I figure that most forum readers won't see it.

OK - now I know what the question is, I can give an answer Smile.
