Hi all

as I'm sure you all know the format of choice in these radio automation systems is 'apt-X' from APT in Belfast. What you may not know is that they now have a plug in for CEP to allow you to open/edit/convert to and from apt-X radio files.

So if you're wondering what to do with your snd, daf and dss archives there is a solution !

details at www.aptx.com

What an awful site. No mention of cost that I could find. Can anyone confirm whether Soft-APTX actually works reliably?

Contrary to the "user name"... I'm not a Radio Guy. I did do an apprenticeship in the early 80's at WNOR in Norfolk, Va, (Which is the very reason I opted NOT to get into radio!). That said, I've (personally) never heard of APTX. Shy

yip , soft apt-X does work - it is employed in a number of applications (not just automation) on a daily basis and is the real alternative to the older hardware compression cards

it is easy to run , of low complexity so doesn't hog the processor and can convert at 20 times real time and is extremely reliable. The CEP plug in has been a saviour for many stations still wanting to retain and expand their apt-X archives.

Vodoo , if you worked in radion in the early eighties you wouldn't have seen much in the way of compression , but apt-X is the compression of choice for many automation systems (indeed the broadcast industry in general) It's a 4:1 ADPCM algorithm so not like the MPEGS of this world . 15,000 radio stations swear by it.

... or swear at it .... Damn data compression.

Actually, for data compression it's not horrible.

I've only used APTX on ISDN live broadcasts, and have no quarrel with it for that.

What surprised me was how difficult it was to find the CEP plug-in on their site and then to see no mention of its price or availability.

But maybe I was having a bad day.

Maybe you were Wink - it happens to all of us. I found it in seconds by typing 'syntrillium' into their search box. It threw up the correct link - http://www.aptx.com/pro-soft-cooledit.asp - immediately.

There is no price info, though. You have to contact them direct for that.

I got an email from somebody at APT, apparently a CEP is $150 a pop and availability is immediate. They also said that their CEP page had been updated in the past few days, so Wildduck you were right:)...

Hi all.. I purchased this plugin a couple of months back hoping that I would be able to eliminate a Maestro/DCS machine in the production room if all they are doing is ripping music, dubbing, etc. Everything works EXCEPT the most important part, entering the cart info. The plugin cannot create the header info for the DAF files. I bugged the developers for a couple of months but still no go.. The last word I received from APT was this:
"Cooledit reads the header info directly from the file, not via
the plugin and as our header does not match the any of the ones it
recognizes, it does not read this info and hence we cannot write back to it. It seems like a bit of a flaw in their whole plugin system, so until they change the way it is done and allow you to access this info via the plugin, I don't see a way round it."

BTW, I recently saw a PR describing this plugin as working well for Scott Systems..

I found out the same thing - but after all the plug in was for editing existing CCC audio rather than creating new content.

In saying that I contacted the guys at APT and they are releasing a new version in the next couple of weeks which supports cart info fully. I'm told that everyone that purchases / purchased the plug in will get the update as soon as it available.

Even in its present form it sure has saved me a lot of time !!!

Let me make sure I'm understanding this correctly. I can buy the apt-x CEP plugin, and import my files directly to Scott Studios? No recording the audio into the PB? No ripping it in using Trim & Label? And I can enter all the pertinent information right from Cool Edit?

Yip , thats it - dss and snd files are covered so all generations of Scotts files can be generated/edited/exported vis the regular CEP interface.
