What outboard compressors and/or preamps do you guys recommend? I would use it primarily for vocals and possibly drums. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Josh

I recently got an Avalon VT 737sp, in a "record for trade" deal. I am really blown away with it. Wink

I use the Aphex Tubessence Model 107 for vocals and acoustic instruments, and it gives a nice warm, rich, sound to whatever I run thru it. It also adds lots of gain. It has two channels, and I've also used it as a two channel mixer, connected to a cd recorder or mini-disc recorder, for two track live recordings, and it worked out great, without having to drag out and set up a big mixer. It has two XLR inputs, phantom power, polarity inverters, low cut filter switches, and signal and oveload lights, and a great sound.

I have one of the Aphex units also (and a DBX unit, amongst a multitude of others) and they are nice for the price. The Avalon blows them all away, but like most things, the price is in proportion to the quality! I wouldn't have been able to afford the Avalon any other way than "recording for trade". Shy

I can't recommend this cause i havn't tried it, but it is on my list to try if i get a chance: 8)

PreSonus DigiMAX 96k 8-Channel Microphone Preamp with Limiters, EQ, Digital Output.

oh and would welcome comments on this one from all! Shy

Also, if you are on a budget the ART products really deliver.

I don't own any pieces of Presonus gear, but I have used the little Tube-Pre (a little over $100) as a D.I. to record bass and it producted a nice "warm" tone for that. They do make some really NICE, "higher end" products, (DigiMax 96K at @ $1,700 and DigiMax LT at @ $1,000) but I have not experienced them. Of course the DigiMax line are multi-channel products. In the $799 price range, there's the Tampa Pre-Amp, by M-Audio, looks interesting. I haven't heard it yet, but if I were in the market for one I'd take a real close look at the Tampa.

I would recommend to check out RNC (Really Nice Compressor) by FMR Audio. It's absolutely great for vocals. For recording various instruments I use Fat 1 (mostly for synths) by TLA Audio and Behringer's Composer Pro (for rhythm (drums) parts).
Can't recommend any stand alone preamps though, because I use my analog mixer's built in preamps with quite OK results.

Good grief! An Avalon:P

Natural Tube compression and saturation I'm guessing?

Is that why you don't use compression during mixing or pre-mastering?

thanks

The RNC people are also now doing a mic pre - well, you get no prizes for guessing what it's called, of course - the RNP. Sort of obvious, really...

Hmmm, that should sound really good. I'll have to reschedule one of my dynamics experiments (unfortunately still!) and research that one soon!8)

The best preamp I ever got the chance to use was a TL Audio Blue series. Tube powered, warm and tight. If I was in the market for a new preamp, my first stop would be the preamp by the RNC compressor people (FMR Audio??). Other than that, I keep wondering about the ART Tube MP and its clones. Can somehting that small and cheap really sound good?

Avalon? Oooo, someone stepped into some money.

I'm not currently in the market for anymore preamps.... (right now, anyways). That said, I have looked at the RNP (and RNC) and both seem to get good reviews from respectful sources. I think for the price, a person would do well to buy a couple of each to have on hand. Wink

Voodoo, I took the RNC 1773 out of the box and it says Austin, Texas on the bottom! Yee Haw! That's your neck of the woods! Are you gettin a commission on these guys?:D

I just finished my 4 hour smoke test on it already (never plug anything into your system until you see if it'll go up in smoke for 4 hours) and it passed. Here goes...:P
