OK I am for sure, getting the Mia, I found a music place here in town that has them for $99, such a deal. Now they use a 1/4 inch balanced plug, I am not too sure what this connector is for sure, from the photo it looks like a 1/4 inch headphone jack, is it the same? I need to figure out the right connectors to run off my stereo for now (rca plugs) for reocrding vinyl.

Thanks all.

Essentially, yes, but each jack is balanced. If you want to run your stereo into it you can use RCA to mono 1/4" jack leads - the lack of a 'ring' connector will automatically unbalance the input, and if you set the card to -10dB input level, it will work fine.

Just don't get spooked by the lack of an input level control - it really is just one switch per channel!

Thanks Steve, I think I can handle that. Thanks for the answer. PLus one more question for anyone out there, I will be running this on WIN98 SE, and I guess I have to use the VxD instead of the WDM, will I be able to record 24bit 96khz with the VxD.

I don't know, I know I have found it on the web for $139, but the music store chain (and it is as nationwide chain) told me they had a price drop since they brought out the Mia/Midi. I know I thought wow 99 sign me up. :D

O.K. man, you got my attention.... What "nationwide chain" might we be talking about? I don't necessarily need another soundcard, but if I can get the MIA for that price, I'll buy a couple and stick em in the home computers!! Smile

Shagrock, Yes Guitar Center is a national chain. I shop at the one in Mayfield Hts, Ohio. (I'm in Willoughby) I usually get most my stuff at Lentine's, Difiore's, Arrowhead, or Sam Ash though, but the local Guitar Center is a cool store. That is an awesome price for that card !!! I have the Audiophile 2496, I got used from E-Bay for $105 & shipping, and the Revolution 7.1 was $99 at COMP USA. A brand new MIA for $100 sounds like a great deal to me.

Hey maybe you know, there used to be a really cool used music store on the west side, I think on Detroit Ave, that had tons of really cool stuff there, was wondering if it was still open, it's been years since I was there. I can't remember the name of the place though.

I thought on Detroit, that was Defiore's, Question or were they on Lorain Ave. The only place I use to go on Detroit all the time was the record store Melody Lane. Cool

Maybe it was Lorain Ave, I'm not sure. but now that you mention it, I know it wasn't Difiore's on Detroit, but a few blocks away from there, within a mile or two. This was a music store with tons of used musical equipment, such as rack stuff, guitars, mixing boards ect, no records. This a few years ago and I never made it back there, though they had lots of cool stuff I was interested in, just wondering if they were still in business. Their prices were really reasonable too, about half of new price.

Would this be the correct cable to connect the RCA jack of a receiver's Tape Out to the balanced input of the Echo Mia?

...and to followup to my last post, would I want this:

3 Meter - 1/4" to RCA plugs SL500I-CM-3 602023 $24.95 ea.

...or this:

3 Meter - RCA to 1/4" plugs SL500I-CR-3 602044 $24.95 ea.

I presume that latter (receiver out to Mia in)...but are these cables really directional? What makes them different?

You certainly do have to use the VxD, and it works fine 24/96.

Well, you've got me... but that's 4 cables for the price some people are paying for the soundcard! I would have thought that you could use something perhaps a little cheaper than these without noticing a shred of difference...

These are the cables they sell you when they spied you in the distance. Even the Monster cables (which are the correct ones, incidentally) are cheaper than this!

If you don't want MIDI, and you can find the Mia non-MIDI version for $99, then you really have no excuse not to go for it, IMHO. This has to be the bargain of the year.

Also, at this price, you could consider more than one card if you want more inputs - unlike Soundblasters, etc. Mias can happily co-exist with each other.

Steve, you are just all over this forum...and I'm glad of it! :)

Just to double check, if I use the Mia and CoolEdit 2000 on my WinXP system, will I be using the Mia to its full potential?

Or does CE2K limit the audio in some way?
Or does WinXP's driver model limit the audio in some way, too?

No, apparently only 7.8% of it, according to alofoz... and it just seems that way this week, because I'm sitting around processing stuff in the background and have slightly more time than usual.

I've never run XP - but on Win2000, using the PureWave drivers as recommended by Echo, there is no restriction on the use of the card that I'm aware of...

Would these cables work for basic 2 channel recording and playback? I figured one of these cables would be for stereo in, and another one for stereo out.

http://bsless.com/ypr102.html

I just got a Mia, and I'm planning on upgrading my PC connected to my stereo system.

No - wrong type. This is a unbalanced stereo cable, and the Mia needs two mono cables. The 1/4" plug is the same, but is used in its balanced mode. If you want to use a Mia unbalanced with RCA connectors, the quickest and easiest way to do it is to use these adaptors from the same shop, and just use standard RCA - RAC cables with them - you will need two pairs.

Normally it's not a good idea to use adaptors in soundcard sockets, but if you are going from a large socket to a smaller one, it's usually fine. It's the other way around that's bad news - you don't ever want to go from, say, a 3.5mm minijack socket to a 1/4" socket in a solid adaptor - you should always use a short flexible cable with the appropriate connectors at each end to prevent the 3.5mm socket from being wrenched from the soundcard.

Just before anybody gets the wrong idea, it is the original Mia that has been discontinued - hence all of the knock-down prices. The MiaMIDI is the replacement for it. There is no problem with drivers, though, because the audio side of the new card is identical to the original Mia, so support will continue for both versions.

Thanks, SteveG. I just ordered 2 pairs of these;

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/sid=030618064720024188213198975186/g=home/g=home/search/bigpid/base_id/38648/

By the way guys, Musician's friend had the Echo MIA for $139 web special. That's where I got mine. That sepcial seems to be over now:( Since the MIA is being dis-continued, being replaced by the the MIA midi, which is essentially the same card with MIDI added, lookout for bargains on the original. They should be popping up every now and then. I wish I could have found it for $99 as shagrock did. That definitely is such a deal on a great soundcard.

You could leave it in. The reading material for the Echo recommends that you route all your windows sounds through your "el cheapo" soundcard. The reason is that Windows sounds tend to be recorded at lower sampling rates, and if you play them through your Mia, it will default to the lower sampling rate. Something you might not want. I'm setting my DAW up such that all windows sounds will go throught the Crystal sound chip on the motherboard, and the Echo MIA will be exclusively playing sounds from CoolEdit 2K and Winamp 2.9.1 only. I'm using Windows XP and the latest 6.08 drivers for the MIA. I'll use the Purewave driver instead of the WDM driver.

Is this generally the procedure when the PC has onboard sound as well? Route all windows sounds through that insteae of the Mia?

Thanks.

Yes, or switch them off altogether, which is safer, and far less annoying.
