there's now a wavpack file filter available for CE. wavpack is another lossless compression format, but this filter has some features that the others don't (like monkey's audio).
first of all, the filter actually saves the "extra information" like cues and playlists, which is very cool because not very many file filters seem to do that.
also, wavpack has a "hybrid" mode that works like lossless except that you get two files instead of just one. the two files together give lossless, but one of the files can be used alone as a lossy version.
finally, while wavpack does not support lossless storage of 32-bit float data, it does give a lot more options for storing them as ints than monkey's audio. you can save as 24-bit, 20-bit, or 16-bit, and you can apply noise shaping or dithering. i did a little experiment to make sure this was really working. i took a 32-bit file and reduced the amplitude by 120 dB, saved it as both a monkey's audio file and a wavpack file (using the default settings), loaded them both back and amplified them back up 120 dB. the difference was amazing...neither of them sounded good, but the monkey's audio was so terribly distorted you couldn't even tell what it was. the wavpack version was very hissy, but the music was still there.

I can report to other forum readers that I've downloaded this filter and, on one quick test of a three minute file, I've verified that it is indeed lossless - and subjectively, using its 'fast' mode, it is indeed fast. I'd recommend to anyone interested in lossless compression that they give it a try themselves.
