I have a wave file that is 36.978 seconds long.

When I I try to convert the file format to mp3 using one of the presets:

"save copy as mp3...options|presets, 32kps, 22050Hz, Mono, CoolEdit truncatesthe begining of the file. Even when I "pad" the original with silence.

The original file is a wav file format originally recorded in stereo at 44100
I converted the wave to 22050 mono.
Then saved copy as mp3 with options

I am very confused. I have another audio program which does not do this.

side note...I chose 32kps, 22050Hz, Mono specifically. File size is more important right now vs. quality. I am trying to convert wave files for use in an internet base sales presentation.

First, what version of Cool Edit are you using?

Second, here's something to try: If you open the MP3 options dialog (from the 'Save As' window), click the 'Advanced' button to show the advanced options. Now, you should see a dropdown list called 'Codec'. Try all three options here and see if they all have the same problem.

Hope this helps!

Here's some more information after some testing.

Cool Edit 2000 1.1 build 2418 [CE2000]

I think it is a bug in the product based on the following:
http://www.munyak.com/images/CoolEdit.jpg

1. I open a wav file in CoolEdit and save as mp3 using preset 32kbps Voice.

2. Open the mp3 file in CoolEdit and the beginning of the wave is truncated. The value in seconds is not consistent, ie...not always 1.055 seconds. The time in seconds varies.

3. If, on the otherhand, I open up the SAME mp3 file in another program SoundEdit, none of the wave is truncated.

I have tried diferent CODEC's, frequency, and bitrate. The result always seems the same.

Ahhh... This sounds like a problem we've encountered before. Send an email to support@syntrillium.com, and if I'm right, they should be able to help you out.

There have been threads about this in the past, and no-one has ever answered my expressed view that the fault is with the Fraunhofer codecs.

The following is just what I believe. It would be wonderful to get a statement refuting any of this.

Fraunhofer have patented, copyrighted and threatened around the world. Much of the work in developing mp3 was done by them. Syntrillium licences the software from them. Syntrillium have done as good a job as possible to remain legal and supply a working system.

All the Fraunhofer codecs that I have tried lose the first part of the audio on a random basis. Multiple encodings are cumulative.
Fraunhofer, although being on the body that sets the standard (MPEG) produces these codecs that don't comply with the standard. If they did, the mp3 decoder would also decode mpeg 1 layer 2.

Other encoder/decoders (Blade?) work correctly.

Will Adobe be looking at this?

I wish I could comment on this, but I really don't have any information for you.

I suspect that as "the squeaky wheel gets the grease", the more complaints and/or suggestions regarding this, the more this will get looked into.

From Syntrillium Support [support1@syntrillium.com]

Quote:
We have heard of this problem occurring on some MP3 files in Cool Edit
2000. I'm enclosing a new filter for you that should remedy the
problem. With all programs closed, please run this file which will do some
"behind the scenes" file swapping for you.

A fix has been sent to me that works. Adobe/syntrillium would probably be pretty pissed if I made the fix publicly available. Contact them for the file.

The file name is mp3fix.zip

Well, if there is a fix, there ought to be someone who, in normal times for Syntrillium, could let us know what it does. Perhaps I'll ask again when everyone is settled in their new [t:7aa8c8d512]adobe [/t:7aa8c8d512] abode?

I hit the problems with Fraunhofer encoders when carrying out tests with very small files. The encoders I tried were the original Fraunhofer DOS ones (l3enc & l3dec) and the ones supplied with CE2000. I believe I did the same tests with CEP, but can't be sure.
