I'm new at this. I'm trying to record to CE2000 from an IC recorder. When I click the record button and start the IC recorder everything seems to be ok. The record level meter starts jumping. After a certain amount of time passes the meter stops moving and freezes in the mid range somewhere. I am connected through the line-in plug and the windows mixer has been set up to record. I even changed the temp directory thinking I was running out of space, but I still have the same problem. I sure would like some advice.

You need to supply alot more information. Like system specs. Memory ? Cpu ? CE version ? Do you have the same problem recording other things, with different settings ?

Oh, and how much time are we talking about?

Thanks, I'll try to give you as much as possible. I have a P3 processor that runs at 866mhz. I've got 256 mhz of ram. The hard drive is 20 G and has about half available. The sound card is a Crystal WDM for both playing and recording. I'm running CE2000 V. 1.1 I have the line-in plug active for recording. The file I'm trying to record is a digital recording that's about 2 hrs long. I have sucessfully recorded the whole thing at one time, but was unsure of recording levels and couldn't get the line-in plug to work. The quality was poor so I decided to record again. Thanks for your help.

Ok, I still have lots of questions.

First, how long into this thing are you getting before it stops ? And, when the level meters "freeze", does cooledit freeze too ? The whole system ? What do you have to do to get it to restart ?

What settings are you using to record ? Sample Rate, Channels, Bit Depth ? Like, 44,100khz, stereo, 16-bit, or what ?

And why don't you enable the "line in" on the playback side of your Windows Mixer so you can hear what's going on ?

And have you thought about recording this file in smaller sections, and then putting them together later ?

Thanks for your help. I went to the win mixer to see if line-in was enabled for play back and record. On record it was but mic was also checked off. Could this be a conflict? Your Q's. The time into the recording before it stops varied each time it happened. Average time is about 3 minutes. When the meter freezes Cool Edit doesn't freeze. To get going again I just hit stop and check to see the time stamp for the end of the file. When I discovered that it only recorded 3 minutes, I started again with a new file. I have tried 8000/mono/32, 8000/mono/16 and had failures on both. I didn't know I could do pieces at a time. If I can't resolve the problem i will consider it. Again thanks.

Geez, that's strange. A 3 minute, 8khz, mono, 32-bit recording is only about 5 1/2 megabytes.

And at 3 minutes a pop, it's not really an option to do this in chunks. Not for a 120 minute recording.......

The "mic" thing. I've never heard of that before. Usually, when you check an item in the "record" panel, any other item becomes unchecked. That is, you're only allowed one.......it's strange, but I don't think that's your problem.

It's also strange for the recording to just "stop" with the level meters in place, and the program still responds.

The only other peice I'm missing to this picture is....what does it sound like when this happens ? And to tell me this, you have to enable the "Line-In" on your Windows Mixer "Playback" panel. So you can hear what is going on. When it stops, does you're IC recorder keep playing ? Are you sure it's stopping, and not pausing, so, you can't just hit the "pause" control and continue recording ?

Sorry for the runaround, but nothing has popped out as an obvious cause yet.

I just tried again. I recorded for 10 minutes. The level meter froze at 3:54. I could still hear the IC recorder playing. The record light was lit. Bottom left corner said "recording". When the meter froze, the wave stopped forming. (I have live update enabled). The file size (time) says 3:33.995 The indicator for free space says 9449.55 MB and the free space (time) says 1127:19.296. I hit the stop button and then play. The level meter started bouncing but I could only hear a slight hiss. What do you think?

I'm sorry to have wasted your time. I think I figured it out. When I pulled the plug from my laptop that was hooked to the recorder I noticed a burr on the molded piece that the plug sticks out of. It's just enough material to keep the plug on the edge of being all the way in. I replaced the cable and tried a six minutte run. Everything worked good. I will post again if I have any more trouble. Again Thanks.

Hey BillyBob. I wouldn't say that you'ld wasted anyones time. Sometimes hearing about these oddball problems serves to remind some of us to be open-minded about looking for unlikely solutions to unusual problems.
