i just got an m-audio duo for my birthday but i can't figure out how to do direct monitoring in cool edit 1.2a. Is it even possible? I just want to be able to hear what i'm recording and my previously recorded tracks through my headphones. Does anybody out there know what i'm talking about?

Yes, we all do... go and read 'Setting the Windows Mixer' in the Tips and Tricks section...

ok well that is not exactly what i was trying to say. see my m-audio duo (a usb soundcard) does not have it's own direct monitoring and there is no way to access it from the windows mixer configuration. somebody told me that it was possible to turn on direct monitoring through cool edit pro. also i'm not having trouble with bleeding, the problem is that when i'm trying to record over a previously recorded track i can't hear what is being recorded while i'm recording it, i have to wait until i play it back and that aint gonna cut it.

Whoops, I should have remembered about Duos. You are probably not going to like this very much - but there is a thread 'M-audio duo usb' that does relate to your problem. And yes, it's slightly confusing for everybody (including me) - read all of it carefully.
