OK i got a new pair of powered studio monitors last night - :DYorkville YSM1p - and a basic D/A to feed them. At 3.45 AM in my basment suite i finally got everything setup and loaded a file into CEP for test playback. I pressed play and BAM, it was so loud i scrambled for the stop button and shut it off, and with ears ringing could hear people upstairs getting up and walking around wondering what happened and where. :O
Ok.. i momentarily forgot that even with the speaker gain trims at the minimum -6db [phhhht!], the full output of the D/A goes to the speakers at full digital scale output from CEP!
So now unless i can find a suitable D/A with analog out level adjust, i have to run digital out from CEP at minus many db in order to get the volume to a reasonable low level.
Anyway does anyone know of a decent stereo spdif D/A with a full range output knob?

There is nothing I can put between me and a highly powered woofer that provides me with my 85dB SPL that will protect the unsuspecting world from accidental mishaps - I do it no matter where I am !:D
Handcuffs maybe - or a lock on the volume control...

ps I once gave my neighbor an unexpected jolt of one of my late night mixes by hitting the wrong monitoring button. It was EV100A's so it was a little loud - nice way to introduce myself to the FBI which was my neighbors profession!

Maybe a suitable DAT machine with a dead mechanism going cheaply somewhere? But why this way of working? (Not a challenge, more seeking understanding ) - can't you use the line out of your soundcard and use the Windows Mixer or equivalent to handle the level reduction?

I'm with Karl here... I use a mixer and with all the other "possibilities" that it offers (i.e. headphone mixes, etc), IMO.... its the only way to go.

Thanks for the tips guys! :P
The monitors sound great btw, much better than the HED (cerwin Vega) 3ways i was using. 8)
The problewm is i have a 44.1kHz. digital mixer - 1996 Promix 01 - and as an early digital model it has no decent digital i/o, so using it to route the main outs would mean two more conversions before getting to the speakers. It has been fine up to now for headphone mixes and adding wetness during recording etc. without using it in a critical loop anywhere.
At this point it is looking more like i should trade the promix1 for a small but complete mackie or soundcraft, and set things up in the standard way, with mains bus and aux. monitor mixes etc.
I guess if i get a mackie it should be the latest vlz offering? I guess good overall signal path spec. and routing-busses is going to be far more important than EQ. or other mixing features since that is done in CEP.

The latest Mackie offerings are the VLZ Pro line. I have a VLZ that was one model earlier. FWIW, I "test drove" a VLZ Pro and didn't think (personally) that the preamps sounded as nice as the regular VLZ series. Of course your mileage may vary, but.... be sure and listen to whatever you shop for before doling out the $$$$.

So are you referring to the XDR mic preamps you don't like as much?
as in the 1604 VLZ Pro
Here's what the sweetwater propaganda officer has to say about these... :P
Redesigned to Deliver Preamp Punch!
They've been designed specifically to deliver a quality of audio above any mixer in its class. You'll hear the difference the minute you plug in!

Well then. That is a good tip! 8)
What did you find preferrable with the older regular VLZ preamps?
I'll be sure to check as many pre's as i can.

What did you find preferrable with the older regular VLZ preamps? | The regular VLZ's (which I have) sound more transparent that the VLZ Pro's. I sensed a little darker timbre with the VLZ Pro's, (which the salesman tried to explain to me was warmth). I didn't necessarily perceive it as warmth, but rather just darker. YMMV of course, but you should be able to hear for yourself when you "test drive".

You may need to build a pad for the inputs to your monitors. We had to do this with our Tannoy Reveal Actives ... eventhough they are going through a mixer and controlled by a speaker out volume control, we had to pad the mixer outs to speaker down over 20db. Even with the mixer, speakers were essentially on or off. They can still be loud enough with the pad, but now we have finer control with volume.
