I have just started working with recording LPs digitally with the goal of converting to CD. I have the turntable running into a phono pre-amp to bump up the signal, with the output running into the line input on my integrated sound card. I am using a freeware utility for recording the audio input as an MP3 (Audacity), then use Roxio's SoundStream to filter and convert to WAVs for recording onto CD.

PROBLEM: My system only records one channel (RIGHT) from the turntable but is recorded as both channels in the software. The left channel is lost and thusly no real stereo recording. I have troubleshot the cables and turntable, and have narrowed down the issue to be either sound card or software related.

Any ideas?

Well, this is the Syntrillum forum and you don't appear to be using any of their products!

However, I'll have a stab at it. For some reason, you are recording only one channel (bad cable, perhaps?) but Roxio knows it can't burn a CD with a single channel and does an auto-conversion to dual channel mono - which you can write to a CD.

All that aside, I fail to understand why you are working this way at all. Why record to a lossy format (MP3) only to convert this to a lossless one to write your CD? This is about the daftest thing you could do. Record as a.wav file and burn direct from that.

You are so cynical. There exists Mono records yes. I have a few. The vast majority are stereo though.
