I am thinking of buying a new mixer with preamps to boost my mics up to line level and also because it's more fun with the sliders Smile but mainly for the preamps. Can I use the insert on each channel as a line-level output? My digi001 has only 2 mic pres (and they aren't very good....) and 6 line ins.

the mixer im thinking about is a yamaha mg 16/4, in case anyone wants to know. As usual, thanks for your help.

I use a Mackie that way sometimes, and I'd expect it would normally be usable that way with other models. Bear in mind that the output would be unbalanced, however.

Since the outputs on the insert are unbalanced, keep the cable runs short and you shouldn't have any problems at all.

I've done that on my Mackie Board too, but you have to keep in mind the insert jack is similar to a stereo jack with two seperate lines. On the insert instead of being stereo, it's one line out, one line back in, so your jack has to be wired right. On the Mackie, The tip is the line out, and the ring is the line back in.Check your manual for details.

The other problem with that is, the insert output I believe, is not controlled by your master output section, and it may be coming off your signal path before your board's eq, and other effect sends, you'd have to check your manual to be certain though.

Another note, with The Mackie's submaster's inserts, the if the plug is only inserted to the first click, you can use the use the insert as an output, but if you push the plug into the second click it will interupt the signal path inside the board.

Depending upon your board, and how it's designed and wired, you also may have a flip switch which may effect your output or signal path.

I'd say try it out before you buy it, but I just use the board's main outputs to go into the computer, which sends the signal not only to the computer, but a direct out to a DA-88, and the master output sliders control the actual output levels. Using the inserts as an output, would bypass them.

You also may want to check if you can download the manual of the mixer before buying it, and read up on it. I do this with many pieces of hardware, so I know what I'm getting before I buy it.

Hope that explains it.

A lot of people do use insert points in this way - and djwayne is quite correct in saying that this is a pre-EQ and master stage output. The insert point comes directly between the mic pre and the EQ, and is probably the cleanest (in the sense of not going through the rest of the board) place to pick off the signal at a reasonable level - which is why it's popular with people doing live multitrack work. The only thing that you have to remember is that the only level control available on the mixer for the insert output is the channel gain control - which isn't usually a problem, though.

thanks everyone!!!!!

I usually try to find the manuals online too, but yamaha's website isn't very good Sad on the other hand, my store has a 30-day echange policy. Everything should be fine.

Took me thirty seconds to find this;

Or should I run an insert cable (1 side stereo TRS, the other 2 mono phone) and run send into the digi001's input, and return into the 001's output?

If I do just run an unbalanced mono cable into the digi001, will I still be able to hear it and use the faders on the PA?? (with the PA connected to the master outputs?)
