So, on a whim I decided to reinstall my BBE Sonic Maximiser last night to run some tracks through, and I'm kicking myself for even removing it in the first place. It's funny how listening to something you've just recorded dry (like an acoustic guitar or even vocals) may seem bright enough, but it isn't until you run it through the BBE that you realize how dull and lifeless it is. I never did an A/B test with it before, which may explain why I couldn't figure out what all the hype was with that box in the first place. Anyway, onto my question...

What plugins are available that would be most true to my trusty Maximiser?? I can't be running each and every track through this thing, as much as I love it. If there isn't a faithful plugin, can anyone offer any advice on how to best use my BBE?

Thanks - Dawgman

I usually use it to to enhance the entire final mix, rather than on just one track. I also kick it on while just listening to music, cause it makes the music sound better. Yes doing a A/B is a good way to demonstate it's features.

I also use a Aphex Aural Exciter with Big Bottom, in my DJ rig, to enhance the sound.

Are you using a hardware BBE, or the DX plug-in?

I have both, and while they don't generally see a lot of use when I am working on stuff "for real", they both get used quite a bit when I'm in songwriting mode.. makes the rough mixes a lot more listenable.

Yes, it's the hardwire BBE. I've had it for years, but always dismissed it as one of those overhyped black boxes (until I did my quick A/B test). The vibe I'm already picking up from my post here is that it isn't something that folks use too often, yet I've read quite a few articles that mention using the BBE to add that "sparkle" to your audio. I've found that despite my best efforts to keep my mixes from sounding dull, they still end up being a bit lackluster, and this isn't something you can fix by just adding in a few dB of 10-16kHz.

Anyway, you already answered my question by mentioning the DX plug-in. I guess I just need to go find it. How do you think it compares to the outboard BBE?

I just have the outboard hardware version of the BBE. I like it alot and use it all the time. If it broke down, I would buy another, but I've had it for years and never had any problems with it. I don't have any plug-in effects yet, but have tried out a few tube warmers which I would like to have someday.

I have 3 hardware units and the software plug-in. The rack units are more a "throw back" from the "live sound" days. I do like to use the software on acoustic guitar (and some keyboard) tracks. I rarely use it on an entire mix. YMMV. FWIW, I find the top end (of both hardware and software) of the BBE Sonic Maximizer's to be grainy! Shy

I can see how "sparkle" can become "grainy" if you're not careful. Is what I'm saying about this 'sparkle' legit in your opinion? I want to make sure I'm articulating this correctly. What have you found to be acceptable alternatives to achieve this result??

"Sparkle" works for me! I've heard the process described as "sheen", "clarity", etc. If you like your outboard units, you should consider the software version. Shy

You know after more consideration, I would say that the BBE process is one that is best "heard" and not described. Why? Well, after this post, I went to their website and did some reading and their description reaks of "snake oil". They even go as far as to say... "restores frequencies lost during MP3 conversion". That ain't possible. Don't get me wrong here.. I've used the rack units for years AND I'm happy with the software version, but I think I'll opt to just trust my ears on this one and not be taken in with their "hocus pocus" description! Wink

OK, I must be blind. Where can I go to find the software version?

Try guitar center.. I don't know where your at, but they are almost everywhere.

Here is the bbe homepage http://www.bbesound.com

and here is the page about the dx/vst plugin http://www.bbesound.com/products/maxim/newplugin.asp

Mine is kinda old now, and doesn't look quite the same as the one on their page.. never looked to see what upgrades are available.. hmm.. maybe I should

Since the Maximiser does generate new upper frequency
material it could be said that it restores lost frequencies.
They wouldn't be exactly the same though so maybe "replaces"
would have been a better choice of words.

"restores frequencies lost during MP3 conversion". That ain't possible.

BBE Sonic Maximizer rocks. Just my 2 cents. Its possible to overdo it though.

If you are, or can become, a registered Cakewalk user, go here:

http://store.yahoo.com/cakewalkdirect/bbesonmaxdow1.html

Otherwise, it appears that you cannot download the plugin. As BBE says:

> In addition, this is the first Sonic Maximizer plug-in
> to be offered in music and pro audio retail stores.

See the full blurb at this site - slightly different from the address linked above:

Fortunately, there's a Guitar Center right around the corner. Thanks to all for the thread.
