uh oh... I've never heard a helicopter talk in the movies. I guess I don't see many movies.
Maybe someone else knows about this... but perhaps you could be more specific, fatal72, about where you've heard this?

i think that fatal72 is referring to a helicopter pilot type sound. am i correct? if so, try using the fft filters.

It's a bit like the 'telephone' voice. Limited bandwidth - you can chop off everything beloow 500 Hz and above 4KHz, apply some boost to the 2.4 KHz area - and add some crackle and static noises.

I thought about mentioning that, but it's not really ideal and it works 'behind the scenes', so the user - while maybe achieving the right end - never really gets to understand why or how he got there.
Teach a man to fish... and all that stuff.

Even using Vinyl, you'd still need to run it through an FFT filter to ge the tone right. I'd add some heavy compression too, and either use volume envelopes or a fast noise gate to mimic the squelch.

Oh yes, I forgot about the squelch - good point.

Don't we all.
Actually, what I think this guy is referring to is the Vocoder Effect.
From Richard Riley's book:
The Vocoder creates retro sounding effects as a voice or sung part takes on the frequency content of another wave. Like the envelope follower it's best when used with rhythmic parts.
1.) Record a long sustained pad on track one. Big analogue sounds with plenty of filter work well.
2.) Record any vocal line on track two.
3.) Draw a box from the top left of the wavebox in track one to the bottom right of the waveblock on track two. This action selects both waveblocks and creates a range within which the effect will be applied.
4.) Within the Vocoder dialog either choose a preset or enter your own parameters for the process.

Why would it be vocoder? Not that it isn't, but I've never really associated a vocoder sound with a helicopter before!
IF the FFT filter method is what's desired, the one problem with the telephone bandpass type of sound is that it's too clean. Some good square clipping is needed in the 4-9KHz region. OK, limited to that range, it won't be square, but you know what I mean.

Why not vocoder? Just put a helicopter wav. in track one.

I guess it would depend if he's trying to sound like the helicopter blade swishing through the air, or the helicopter pilot talking on the internal intercom/radio system.

He did tell us in his first post - "COMBAT RADIO" - seemed clear enough to me.
