I'm having troubles playing back 24 tracks. CE 2.1 just can't background mix fast enough. Seeing as I haven't been able to remedy the actual cause of this problem, I'm looking for another solution. I heard someone mention that Cool Edit can pre-mix the entire multitrack recording. How do you turn on this setting? I can't seem to find it anywhere. I guess they might have just been talking about creating a mixdown, but I'd like to know. Thanks,

If you right click on the mix bar, you can set it to 'Mix Entire Session' - maybe this is what you are thinking about? You can also change the priority level, so this may help as well.
Alternatively, why not just wait for the mix to be completed before playing it?

It seems to me that background mixing isn't the answer when it comes to tracks with realtime effects. In other words, if you have a session which won't replay without stuttering, it will still exhibit the problem even if background mixing is set to premix the whole file. (I'm open to correction here of course....). Locking effects onto tracks seems to be the best way of avoiding stutters - assuming it's the effects load that's causing the problem. If it's plain tracks, and it's a well-specified machine, there must be some other problem causing restriction to 24 tracks, I'd say.
Of course, the ultimate answer is to mix down - perhaps just a highlighted section of the file, if that's all that's needed for the moment.
