Ok, heres the deal. Recently a band released a remastered version of one of thier albums. The problem comes in when I try to mix the b sides in with the album, the sound is totally different! I realize that it is nearly impossable to take a wave file from a cd and make it sound remastered to fit with the others but I'm certain something can be done. The sound of the remastered cd is good, very load and lots of bass and a little grainy, I'm assuming its from a touch too much of the Drive setting but I heard some engineers do that to give some tracks a slightly richer sound. I've tried lots of plug ins, I have Waves and PSP Mixpack and BBE Sonic Maximizer and T Racks. I've used lots of L2 from waves but it still doesnt have that punch! Im certain it must be a Compression problem. Question, what program is best to increase maximum loudness without distortion. Can someone walk me through a session to help me achieve the effect i want. I've been using Maxx bass and then L2 but it just isnt working.its still not loud enough. Can someone help? What would you do? Details of what program and setting would be nice:) Thanks in advance George
Ps. the remastered cd I'm refering to is Duran Durans Box Set.
Mastered by Nick Webb at Abbey Road Studio..nice job Mr. Webb.

Most loudness maximization nowadays is, indeed, a problem. (hint)

I'm sorry, but that sentence doesn't quite hold water...
You see, loudness maximization is a distortion.
You will inevitably lose some things out of the mix when you do this to your music (namely, dynamic range - which is also where the punch comes from... so if you overdo it, you have no punch!)

I'm not so sure anyone will be able to effectively help you with this at a distance - my best advice would be to try to find some help in your locale.

Best... -Jon

Download the demo for iZotope's Ozone 2. Everything you need to make it sound commercially compressed is in there. Lots of parameters to playwith.

Indeed! The tricky bit with Ozone (and it is possible) is to get stuff to sound good without making it sound like a typical commercial (= overcompressed, overexcited) release...
