Man, as if it wasn't enough to have to send to of my soundcards back to M-audio for testing, I just found out, after running Maxtor's PowerMax, that the 160 GB I bought a month ago is defective. (Maxtor confirmed this when I called and told them the error code.) So here it is PUBLICLY I am sooooooo sorry for whatever I did back then to warrant this karma. Please PLEASE let me have a fuctional DAW. I have worked so hard, please PLEASE!!!!!!
The worst part about it is that when I was purchasing the hard drive I got the box underneath the one on top. There goes that superstition.

You sure that this was Karma? couldn't have been Chicken Korma by any chance? :D
This sort of thing happens to me too, but only when I need stuff to work...

It's called "Murphy's Law" and.... I live by it daily. I'll spare you a run-down of my last 10 months, but.... take your bad day at the races and multiply it X 10!!! You just gotta keep at it until you wear them down!

Well, like a friend of mine says, "It's better to break down in your driveway than miles from home." In other words, what better time to catch it than when two of your soundcards already don't work.

Wow, that's just amazing. Seems like it's time to send you a sympathy card -- seriously. Or to take up a collection to pay for a good therapist!

Well, when I worked at Walmart, I always put the box that I dropped underneath the one on top, just for people like you :P
On second thought, I just made that up: I never worked at Walmart....Have a nice day!
P.S. on a more serious note, sorry about your troubles.

SPOOKY!! I clicked on 'reply to topic' on this thread, and immediately the ADSL line was disconnected!!
Anyway, now it's back up and here I am again.
Last night I collected my wife from the 4th floor of a Uni building which has only one lift. We get in the lift, and it won't budge. I pick up the lift emergency phone, and the operator says, "What's the reference number of the lift, please?" I look on the metal plate - and groan.... "It's number 13" I tell her. And my wife says, "And of course it's the 13th today"......
So we sat there for 90 minutes waiting for the mechanic - actually it was quite romantic.....

You know, as far as system hardware goes, I always shop by price. Around once a year, maybe longer, I'll grab a Mobo and CPU combo from Fry's - $79 - $125 bucks. Storage upgrades happen every 2 -3 years - $100 bucks. Add-ons, toys and memory get bought when the price of what I'm looking for seems to have bottomed. Oh well.
I guess what I'm saying is, if I had $3000 to burn, the last thing I would do is go buy a bunch of computer hardware, because you could easily get away with spending less than a third of this by just timing it out right.
And I'm not really a frugal shopper otherwise, but it quickly became apparent when I started putting systems together that over 6 weeks time, the overall price for the finished product will dramatically and repeatedly fluctuate. Like the stock market really.
Who am I talking to ? Where the hell am I ?!

I don't know who you're talking to, William. The bulk of my money went into my room, a tangible object. No doubt I've paid a lot for my system but, on that end, I think I did alright.
My first Omni Studio was a Christmas gift from my wife. Yes, she paid a little over four but that was when it was brand new, and again, a gift.
My second Omni was either $250 or $350, can't remember, but it was a really good deal (Hey, for any of you snicker-ers out there laughing that I say $250 - $350 is a good deal for a sound card that might have problems, let me add it came with a lifetime warranty and that the guys at M-audio are doing their tests as we speak. If anything's wrong with it, I get a new card.)
My 1010, which I've never had a problem with, was $475 new in the box.
As for other misc. parts on my machine, I opted to have hot swap boxes: #1 - so that after a band records here I can simply pop the hard drive out and give it to them (making them responsible for the storage of their audio files... guess I should mention they supply the hard drive) and 2.) looks.
Guess what I'm getting at is that, yeah, I spent some cash on my machine, but it was with the awareness that computer parts, like cars, depreciate the moment you drive them out of the lot. If I ever have real money to invest in this little hobbie of mine, believe me, the bulk of it will go into preamps and microphones, not processors and RAM.
Did I mention I got a really good deal on my hard drives? 200 GB for $150 after rebate. Now if they only worked....

It makes me cry.... I have a 6gig scsi drive silent under my desk here that cost me 600 pounds sterling in about 1998, which as far as I'm concerned isn't very long ago..... (but at least it worked till it become obsolete!).
- Ozpeter (but at least my wife & I weren't stuck at the top of a NY skyscraper today! Sorry to hear about all that, East Coast people...)
