Hi, when I trim a file to start without silence, ie straight into it and save as mp3 it adds a tiny intro of silence, its a real pain when trying to create a loop, any ideas. Does not happen when save to Wav.

If you're just creating a loop, couldn't you do without MP3 ?
Anyway, this a well documented problem to which there is no solution.
That is, CE, as you have discovered adds a bit of silence. Actually, I think it truncates the start and finish of Mp3's. Do a search here for "adds silence to mp3's" or something just as clever and you'll see a great deal of discussion.
Bottom line is, there's nothing you can do about it.

From the help file for CEP2.x, assuming that's what you are using: | Quote: | | Cool Edit Loop files are essentially MP3 files with a .cel extension, but with a header that contains two important items. The first is the loop info, just as it’s saved with a .wav file and is set under View > Wave Properties > Loop Info. The .cel file also works to avoid a problem with MP3 files. It’s in the nature of MP3 files that a very small amount of silence is added to the beginning and/or end of an MP3 file when it’s encoded. When working with a loop, though, it’s enough to throw the entire loop off. As it saves a .cel file, Cool Edit Pro calculates how much silence is going to be added to the MP3 file and writes this information into the .cel header. Then, when Cool Edit Pro loads a .cel file, it reads this silence information and automatically removes the silence from the file so that it’ll loop smoothly. |
Sounds like you should read up on the section of the help file related to creating and using loops - unless it's not CEP2.x that you are using.

Ok, I stand somewhat corrected. :D
I thought this was a problem with CE, rather than an inherent quality of mp3's. I remember people griping and wondering what "Syntrillium was gonna do about it".

As far as I'm aware, the fix with .cel files only applies in the context of loops - you're quite right if it's just a matter of a straight mp3.

I had the very same problem of files being clipped when saving as MP3 in CE2000.
I contacted Synt support and they sent me a bug fix for it that cured it.
I can't remember much more as it was over 18 months ago and since I reached 40 my brain has been operating on a lossy compression algorythm and remebering only things it thinks I'll need later, like my name and where I live.
