I usually don't get too up about free plugins but I found a few (VST) the last two days that are, well..different. The first is PSP PianoVerb, a reverb that is unique in the fact that it was sampled with the sympathetic vibration of piano strings. I tried it on CEP with my Spin Audio VST Wrapper lite (also free) and I think it's real nice:

The others are here: http://www.tobybear.de/
Robobear & Silverbox are unique to me but are more SFXish.
CowDelay and Modbag work in CEP as well and are worth a check out if you like delays and filters.

Here's another VST FX plugin which I just downloaded tonight. This is a one of a kind and I'm keeping an eye on this site as well. There's a stereo and mono version as well.

He's also writing a how to guide on making VST plugins. Not my thing but it's the only guide of it's type I've seen.

Merrick: I too have been using PSP's PianoVerb for a while now - absolutly love it. It goes on every piano line I create (I use a sampling card with some pretty sexy piano samples - PianoVerb just add s that extra magic to the sound).
Another freebee effect I often use is rgcAudio's High Frequency Stimulator. Its kinda like a BBE Maximizer, without the low contor. Apply this over a wet reverb to get that nice lexicon style sparkle. Simply a must-have!

PS: Don't bother d/ling their free reverb, its crap.

I'm going to be sharing my free plugins/etc finds here for all you Syntheads. So check this thread now and then for updates or just to add a tip of your own. Below is a copy of a letter I sent to someone who sent me a copy of a freely distributed VSTi synth. It's chock full of tips and leads.
Hello Stefan, and thanks so much. Happy Easter to you too! I have indeed downloaded the JX220 v1.1 I'm very impressed with it and the banks are cool. Last night I accidentially found via a search: http://www.databaseaudio.co.uk/chart.php?cs=1 the new web site of the creator of Tritum/PPD: http://etikettbolaget.se/tracy/ and I downloaded Tritum. I book marked the page where he will be releasing two new VSTi's as Demo/beta releases: http://etikettbolaget.se/tracy/ . I have been a convert to virtual instruments for three weeks now. In fact my DAW runs with Cool Edit as my editor and a hardware Roland MC50mkII sequencer. Both are very rock solid. But I'm a bit of an old timer and for years I was using FM stuff (mostly Alesis) and going into the A/D that way, ugh! So I decided to try Virtual. I have been learning really fast but everything is so new. I can't afford the money or time to get Cubase 5.0 so I searched around and found VSampler stand alone demo. It dosen't play all the free VSTi's (I got 'em all) and except for the LM-9, it won't play any drum machines. So I did some more searching and I found this host which is great: http://www.synthedit.com/ . I haven't yet finished learning it yet and it's Sound Font player isn't good, but it's VSTi interface is excellent. I'm going to play with it's own synth structures and see how it is as a .wav player. Otherwise I downloaded this sampler/Sound Font player demo which looks very amature but is actually the best sounding audio sampler I've heard: http://personal.inet.fi/taide/jeskola/xs1/ .
Thanks for your help.
Sincerely,
Merrick

I have to post this one:
If you are new to the concept of virtual instruments but don't want to start fooling with things like VST hosts, VSTi's, DXi hosts, Sonar etc; but you want to get your feet wet AND want it for free, then download this:
http://www.nativeinstruments.de/index.php?soundforumsynth_us
You'll need a MIDI port on your computer and a midi keyboard. This is the best stand alone virtual synth I've seen and it records into Cool edit seamlessly (you'll need to loop your sound card with a cable; either analog audio out>to analog audio in, or spdif out> to spdif>in
And please post if you've tried this!
