I've recently come across Paul Kellett's freeware "Wavetools" on the Maxim Audio site -
http://www.maxim.abel.co.uk/utilities.htm
These freeware utilities provide....
Audio meter:
This program gives the following display from your soundcard inputs:
- Stereo Peak meters: 0 to -18dB.
- Stereo Peak meters: 0 to -96dB.
- Stereo RMS (average) meters: 0 to -96dB.
- Phase Correlation meter: 0 to 180 degrees
- Vectorscope: instantaneous Left vs. Right level
- Peak Hold: highest level since last reset (click to reset).
.....plus Spectrum analyser, Signal generator, and Oscilloscope, all of whose features I won't attempt to describe.
Also on the site is the "SampleCD" CD player which has some useful looping and backspacing features, and the "Waveinfo" program which gives extended information about Wav files (eg cue data) when viewing their properties.
I've not found a mention of these on this forum, although the utilities are several years old. At the price, a short and worthwhile download, and useful in conjunction with Cool Edit. However, they run as stand-alones, so for instance the spectrum analyser shows you the noise print of your soundcard when nothing is happening. (Which shows my SB Live Platinum, no it wasn't me who bought one from SteveG, has a low frequency rumble but little hiss).
