WWW

hi. recently I noticed that the VST landscape has changed quite a bit since I last looked quite a while ago i.e. there seems to be now a wealth of free VST plugins whereas before there was either piracy or giving up an arm and a leg per VST.   I was wondering if there are a set of free VST plugins that are generally considered good and useful. I am hoping that people will take the time to list which free plugins they use and why.

thanks in advance.

much oblidged,

so it seems that there are at least a few good free VSTs or rather better labelled as community VSTs, I like to donate to the developers of free and open source stuff, for one I'm a developer by day

Fine, actually, I included these links in the hope Adobe might use these VST's as defaults within Audition but what I've given you, as you suggest, doesn't even scratch the surface.

http://free-plugin-list.com/free-vst-plugins.php - hundreds of them.

But actually answering the question, or sort-of... this comes from a post of mine on the Adobe forums:-

"I'm a sucker for free vst effects (and instruments, but that's another story).

However, when it comes to post-production of classical music, there's a slew of them I know I shall never use. Just by way of sharing information, here's the list I've now included in the folder Audition scans, after pruning out the weird and not-so-wonderful.

Analysis:

Inspector
Voxengo Span

Compression:

The Fish Fillets - Blockfish, Floorfish, Spitfish
BuzMaxi3
BuzMaxi
C3multibandcomp
Classic Compressor
Classic Master Limiter
Endorphin
E-Phonic XPressor
GComp
George Yohng's W1 limiter
GeneComp3
GeneComp

Grancomp3
Grancomp
msComp
StComp_v1r
TLs_Maximizer1.1
TLs_SaturatedDriver
TLs_pocket_limiter

Delay:

Karlette
msDelay

EQ:

Classic EQ
LPGEQ
NyquistEQ
ParisEQ
PLParEQ1

Reverb:

Ambience
Classic Reverb
FreeverbToo16
KarmaFX Reverb

Glaceverb
RoomMachine844
SIR
WAReverb

Tools:

BitViewer
C_Superstereo
msBalance
msDecode
msEncode
msSwap
QSpectPro
Sonogram SG-1
StereoTools
TapeIt
VoxengoMSED

General:

Luxonix LFX1310

If those names raise curiosity that Google doesn't satisfy, let me know and I'll try to provide detail."

However, it's probably out of date....

Not sure what people think about posting references to other forums... There's a recent thread in the Sound On Sound forum about free VSTs and similar widgets, where lots of folks have posted their likes and dislikes. Have a look here.

once again , thanks, I have been using the Classic VSTs and they so far work pretty well, I'll get to the Voxengo next and so forth. BTW, can we actually use analysis oriented VSTs in AA, for some reason I thought the plugins only kicked in for effects

I can't add anything really useful, but I definitely give a plug for the classic plugins.  Free or not, they're just quality plugs.  Yay free stuff that doesn't suck!!!!
